It all started in 1989 around August/September, my wife Sue had a pomeranian pup, I had hunting terriers of which I used to hunt rabbits and foxes, one night we had a severe storm, due to flooding of the yards I had to let the terriers out of their pens, so they were able to take shelter under our veranda. The following morning early, my wife had let her Pom pup out to go potty under supervision, she then put Cheeky back in her crate and returned to bed, unfortunately Sue had failed to see that the door of the crate had not clipped properly,Cheeky had managed to get out, sadly a small pom pup looks very similar to a Fox cub. I need not say any more. Sue decided then she wished to get a dog of her own which my dog's could not hurt or harm, Sue originally went in search for an English Mastiff ( I am now grateful she was unable to find one which was available)Not being able to locate a English Mastiff,
one day Sue came home and said what about a Saint Bernard, I almost freaked out, my only knowledge of Saint Bernards, was having watched the movie Cujo(terrible introduction to Saints) I also though she would not be able to find one of these either, unbeknown to me she had already located not one but two, being rehomed by a breeder and said we had an appiontment on the weekend to go an view them, I simply thought Yeah we will go see them and all I would have to say, was no they were too big,we didn't have the room(mind you we have 6.5 acres)when we arrived at the breeders Kennels, we were told we had the choice of two girls, one a smooth coat ,which was in the front yard already being very freindly, the second a rough coat which was in the front hallway of the house with pups(unbeknown to me)when I approached the door,I thought this second girl was going to burst through the door and attack,my thoughts of Cujo the movie came instantly to mind. Joan said not too worry Gypsy did not know us and she was only being protective of her babies and asked us to stand back and she would bring Gypsy out and introduce us,being pretty apprehensive we stood back, well Gypsy came out and was all over us,all cuddles and kisses,it was instant love,I said there and then to Sue we had to have her and this is how we got our first Saint Bernard,Gypsy had stolen our Hearts,Sadly Gypsy has left us,but she will be forever in our hearts.
Since our humble beginnings of sharing our lives with one Saint, we have been introduced to a whole new world, our interest of the breed grew, over the years we have made many four and two legged friends which have the same great loved of this Beautiful and Magnificant Breed, aptly named SAINT BERNARD.
